Billie the Kid (Billie Kearns) is a Dené poet and an Electrical Engineering student currently based in Kingston, ON. For two years in a row Billie represented Ottawa with the Ottawa Youth Poetry Slam Team at the Canadian national youth festival in 2013 and in 2014. She also competed on the Capital Slam Team at the Canadian Festival of Spoken word in 2015 and in 2016. She led Queen's University to compete for its first time in the College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational in 2016 and again in 2017. Originally from Yellowknife, Billie holds a northern identity while adapting to traditional culture in eastern-Ontario. Her poems play with metaphors to tell stories of friends and family, often while exploring the issues of cultural identity.
